Heavy flavour in ALICE
نویسنده
چکیده
ALICE [1, 2] is the dedicated heavy-ion experiment at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). The main physics goal of the experiment is the study of strongly-interacting matter in the conditions of high energy density (> 10 GeV/fm) and high temperature (> ∼ 0.2 GeV), expected to be reached in central Pb–Pb collisions at √ sNN = 5.5 TeV. Under these conditions, according to lattice QCD calculations, quark confinement into colourless hadrons should be removed and a deconfined Quark–Gluon Plasma should be formed [1]. Heavy-flavour particles are regarded as effective probes of the system conditions. In particular:

Heavy Quarks will be abundantly produced in Heavy Ion Collisions at LHC energies. Both, the production of open heavy flavoured mesons and quarkonia will probe the strongly interacting medium created in these reactions. In particular, the ALICE detector will be able to measure heavy flavour production down to low transverse momentum, combining leptonic and hadronic channels, covering a large rap...
متن کاملPreparation for heavy-flavour measurements with ALICE at the LHC
ALICE [1] will study nucleus–nucleus and proton–proton collisions at the LHC. The main goal of the experiment is to investigate the properties of QCD matter at the extreme energy densities that will be reached in Pb–Pb collisions. Heavy quarks (charm and beauty) are regarded as powerful tools for this study. After briefly reviewing the ALICE heavy-flavour program, we will describe the preparati...
متن کاملOpen heavy-flavour production in ALICE
After a short review of the Physics motivations for the study of open heavy flavour production in proton–proton, proton–nucleus and nucleus–nucleus collisions at the LHC, we present results on the expected performance of the ALICE experiment for charm and beauty production measurements. متن کاملHeavy-flavour and quarkonium measurements in Pb–Pb collisions at √ sNN = 2.76 TeV with ALICE
We report on the latest results on heavy-flavour and J/ψ production at both midrapidity and forward rapidity, in Pb–Pb collisions at √ sNN = 2.76 TeV, measured with the ALICE experiment at the LHC. We present measurements of the nuclear modification factor for open heavy-flavours and J/ψ and compare these results to model predictions. Preliminary results on the elliptic flow of D mesons and J/ψ...
متن کاملOpen Charm Mesons at the LHC with ALICE
The ALICE experiment will be able to detect hadrons containing charm and beauty quarks in proton-proton and heavy ion collisions in the new energy regime of the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC). Open charmed mesons are a powerful tool to study the medium produced in heavy ion collisions, since charm quarks are produced on a very short time scale and they experience the whole history of the coll...
متن کاملStrangeness and heavy flavours within the ALICE experiment
The ALICE experiment at CERN is now ready to take data in protonproton and ultra-relativistic heavy-ion collisions at LHC. This review starts with a description of the ALICE experimental setup and its excellent tracking and particle identification capabilities. Then, we will discuss the ways to probe the hot and dense medium created at multi-TeV energies by measuring the yields and kinematic ch...
